Mom’s Magic

Lady-with-squirrel

Lady-with-squirrel

Mom's Magic.

Dedicated to my Mom.

The vicious little gremlin was striking me on the head with a hammer, as I tried to bury it in the pillow. The pain throbbed in my temple like sound waves on a monitor. Today the gremlin raged in earnest.

Grandma brought me a cup of coffee and a plate of fresh pancakes.

“Another migraine?” she asked sympathetically.

I hummed in agreement then added:

“Sorry, Babushka. I can’t eat. I feel sick.”

Grandma gently patted my head, took the food and left the room.

Suddenly I felt relief, like a veil fell from my eyes. The pain receded.

‘Mom has come home!’ I decided.

And so, she did, immediately coming into the room and hugging me.

Mom’s magic has always worked. Any pain went away, as soon as she came home.

I regret that I rarely told my mother and grandmother how grateful I am to them. With them by my side, no gremlins could scare me.

I wrote this story at the writing marathon of Lolita Volkova, «Sad and Funny» (Round 5. Gratitude).

Hummingbird 1

Hummingbird 2

Queen of the Hummingbirds.
(From the series: Lina MacGregor Mysteries)

Dedicated to my dearest friend.

Probably not a fairy tale.
I wrote this story at the writing marathon of Lolita Volkova, «Sad and Funny» (Round 39. “The fairy tale is a lie…).
The legendary Russian poet A. S. Pushkin once wrote: “The fairy tale is a lie, but there is a hint in it, a lesson for good fellows”.

On a sunny summer day, I sat on the patio, writing another mystery. The wind carried the scent of lilies. Hummingbirds flew by me every now and then.

The Ginger Rascal was chasing the Green Charmer and driving him from the nectar feeder, again and again. The nectar for them, of course, was prepared not by the Gods, but by me.

The hummingbirds lived up to their name and hummed with all their might.

“I never would have thought that they could be in Canada; it seems too cold for them here. I wonder why there are no hummingbirds in Russia?” I thought. “They fly like crazy. So, their Queen will be here soon.”

And exactly five minutes later she arrived.

Not flying with her own wings, or on a broom, but rather driving in on a Ford pickup truck.

The Queen shouted a greeting to me.

I walked around the house and met her.

The truck’s window rolled up, the door swung open, and long legs in cowboy boots appeared.

My friend came out and hugged me. “Hi, Lina! What could be better than a friend?” she exclaimed, and continued, “A friend with cake!”

“I knew you would come, Gloria.”

She wasn’t surprised. We have long been accustomed to the fact that even if we talk to her on the phone, hummingbirds inevitably arrive. During the summer, of course. Because of this, I like to call her Queen of the Hummingbirds. She also has a lot of them on her farm, as befitting her royal status. Like the seasons themselves, the birds return to Gloria every year.

“How are my subjects?” she asked.

“Hooligans.”

“Let’s talk some sense into them, then.”

We drank tea and watched the birds. A greyish hummingbird perched on a branch and goggled its beady eyes at the two flying hooligans.

“Ginger, just stop it!” the Queen commanded. “Green is also thirsty.”

The Ginger Rascal obeyed and flew away.

“…a lesson for good fellows:” if you love birds, feed and protect them for decades. You too can become Monarch of the Hummingbirds.

First date or Welcome to Russia.
(From the series: Lina MacGregor Mysteries)

This story dedicated to my husband.

Moscow. February 1998.

The frosty glass of a minibus was successfully hiding the Moscow streets.

«Faster, faster,» I begged to myself. «His flight is about to land. I’ll be late!»

The board at the Sheremetyevo-2 Airport announced: my new Canadian friend’s flight had landed.

«Until now, we have communicated only by email and phone. What if I don’t recognize him?» — I wondered, standing in the crowd of welcomers.

When my excitement became unbearable, the blonde man of my dreams came out into the hall.

My heart jumped and almost got stuck in my throat: «That’s him!»

— Lina!

— Roy!

His long legs were rapidly closing the space between us. Roy towered over the crowd and cut it like an icebreaker through a frozen sea.

A warm Canadian smile immediately comforted me, and the worries were gone. Such tenderness poured from his dark blue eyes that I felt like I was entering a heated house from a frosty street.

We rushed to each other.

I have reduced the exchange of greetings to a minimum.

— We need to switch the airport and go to «Sheremetyevo-1» quickly. Our flight to Volgograd departs from there.

To my delight, Roy understood my English well.

In a hurry, we almost ran into a policeman. Around his neck was hanging a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The Russian cop was smoking a cigarette right under the «No Smoking!» sign. The blue rings of smoke drifted slowly towards the smoke-filled ceiling.

Roy was dumbfounded. I took his hand, pulled him gently towards the exit and grinned:

— Welcome to Russia!

Roy could neither speak nor read Russian, but the red circle with the crossed out cigarette was understandable without words.

— Is that a cop? Why does he smoke? The sign prohibits it. Why does he need a rifle? You have a war?

— Yes. I don’t know. I myself see a machine gun for the first time in my life. No war in here! — I underlined the last phrase.

It is difficult to answer questions in a foreign language and at the same time make your way through the crowd. I did not pay attention to the drunken man who was walking towards us.

Roy noticed him and pulled my hand in time. We jumped aside.

A man erupted a fountain of vomit almost at our feet.

Fortunately, we didn’t get sprayed.

— He, uh… sick, — I forgot the word «drunk» in English.

Roy smiled just like Dean Reed*.

— Yeah. Let’s fly to Volgograd!

*Dean Reed — an American actor, singer, songwriter and social activist.

(Barbara O’Sullivan).

Curling Princesses

This story dedicated to Lois Mollard, Charlotte Trainor, Lois Kingdon, Sharon York and Barb O’Sullivan.

Age is a loose concept, it is like an elastic band. In my school years, the girls at recess stretched it between themselves and skipped rope with it.

Residents of different countries have different attitudes towards age.

Russian employers, for example, dream of twenty-year-old employees with an academic degree and ten years of professional experience. In their opinion, all those over thirty should just crawl to the cemetery and die there.

The rest of the Russians believe that a woman has only three ages: a baby, a girl, and a young woman… I don’t know about the age of the men. Who cares about a man’s age anyway?

In Canada, the mother of a friend of mine surfs and climbs mountains. The lady is over ninety.

It feels like there is no such thing as age in North America at all.

Most of all I am inspired by our hometown curling princesses — young ladies in their eighties and over. Especially those who crushed our team to smithereens at the previous tournament. It hurts me that one of them is no longer with us.

There is one consolation though: curling princesses don’t die.

They go to play in higher-level clubs and stay young forever.

This story I wrote at the writing marathon of Lolita Volkova «Sad and Funny» (Round 20. Age).
